Mission Masters — Mobile Application

MISSION MASTERS ESCAPE ROOM ALBUFEIRA - Portugal - 2020
Murder, accomplices, and a hotel about to explode!

Briefing

In response to the COVID-19 restrictions in 2020, Unloop was challenged by Mission Masters Escape Room Albufeira to bring their escape room experience to the digital.
Thus was born Mission Masters, an augmented reality game designed for two players who are challenged to solve a case together, resembling the dynamics of a physical escape room, despite the physical distance between them, aimed to foster connection during a time when physical interaction was limited.
Mission Masters encourages outdoor and indoor play, promising immersive experiences and challenging riddles with access from any place around the world.
Set in the mysterious Hotel Berolige in New York, players must uncover a conspiracy and escape a locked hotel room before it explodes.

Mobile App

The application's interface draws inspiration from recent spy movies and futuristic technology, incorporating the client's visual identity. Users start the game by selecting an experience to initiate matchmaking. Developed for remote play between two players, the interface adapts according to the role the player has chosen at the beginning of the game.
Mission Masters offers distinct experiences for each player, resembling traditional escape rooms digitally. Players assume the roles of agent and hacker. Each player has a specific interface for finding clues: one navigates augmented reality to interact with objects, while the other accesses a database for information. Puzzle difficulty encourages collaboration, drawing from established escape room mechanics.

Suitable both for indoor and outdoor play, Mission Masters offers immersive gameplay and challenging puzzles, requiring only a phone. Players solve riddles, explore diverse locations, and immerse themselves in realistic environments to uncover clues and escape. The success of the mission relies on the cooperation of both players, referring to the essence of physical escape rooms, ensuring an engaging experience for all.

Agent

One of the players assumes the role of an undercover agent, aka a hotel employee trapped in room 141. The experience starts with the user entering the door and appearing in Augmented Reality. The door serves as a portal to the hotel room, and like that, the game begins.
Using augmented reality, the player explores the room and uncovers clues. Likewise, the interface prioritizes transparency and clear visual cues to guarantee full immersion in the experience. All props were meticulously crafted for clarity and mobile optimization. Each asset had to be clear in its visuals as they contained clues necessary for understanding the puzzle. The goal is to maintain augmented reality's quality to make the player feel as if they are physically present in the room.

FEATURES:
1. Enter the AR Portal
2. There is a corpse in the bathroom! What will you do?
3. Receive a call from the Hacker. Now it's just the two of you!
4. Find the way out of the locked room.
5. Solve the case and clear the victim's name.
6. Unlock the exit door and escape before the room explodes!

Hacker

Player two is a hacker who gained access to a database of the NSA and is in contact with the Agent because they noticed an anomaly. The hacker's mission is to guide the Agent throughout the game, assisting in solving clues and helping the Agent escape the hotel room before it explodes.
The hacker's user interface resembles an operating system, featuring folder-like structures and a search command to access multiple devices. This design adopts a retro hacker style, employing a black and green color palette, squared typefaces, and other details to enhance the player's sense of being a real hacker, adding personality to the game's aesthetics.

FEATURES:
1. Communicate with the other player.
2. Search for information in a database.
3. Hack the system to gain access to records, private emails, and deleted evidence.
4. Help your friend escape the room before it explodes!

Environment

In order to bring the real Escape Room experience to the game, we created a realistic 3D environment of room 141 within the mysterious Hotel Berolige in New York.
The room is full of interactive assets linked to clues, essential for the player to find his way out of the room.
The whole aesthetics and art of the room were inspired by the Scandinavian style, resulting in a more modern, cozy, and minimalist environment. To improve the user's experience and dimension of the story was created an unusual layout of the room including a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and even a small living room area, as well as secret departments, hidden vaults, and many other “Easter Eggs” that the player will find throughout the game.
